What Are You Waiting For?

Posted by Marty Stanley on April 29, 2010

Many brave individuals are re-inventing themselves as a result of changes in the workplace. So what are organizations doing as a result of leaner times?

“Doing more with less” is not a good answer.  Here’s why:

A recent study indicated that 63% of people under age 45 plan to leave their current employer when the economy improves.

This is a sign that employers are not paying attention to internal processes, decision making and/or communication.  This lack of attention is causing discontent. For organizations to be successful, change is needed.  Demographics of the workforce are changing, so hiring, compensation, training and benefit practices need to reflect those changes. Consumers are making different decisions about how to spend their time and money and so are employees.

Will your organization make the cut?

Seven things to do while waiting for things to change:

  1. Plan for the future – are your vision and mission relevant?
  2. Talk to customers, clients or members – how are you doing? What do they want? And is your new vision in line with that?
  3. How do your operational policies and practices reflect that new vision or core values?
  4. Review job descriptions and job structures – are they relevant and reflect duties and accountabilities for the future?
  5. Develop job and professional skills. Are people ready for the future?
  6. Invest in updated marketing materials, website upgrades or customer appreciation initiatives
  7. Communicate accomplishments, celebrate successes and share ideas about the future
